What Causes Dandruff

Medical science still does not really know what causes dandruff. Dandruff might be considered a disease of the scalp, which produces small flakes on the scalp and in the hair. The scientific name for this condition is seborrheic dermatitis.

What Causes Dandruff

There is a great deal of evidence that indicates an infection of some sort is the cause of this condition. But this has not yet been proved, and the agent that might be causing such an infection has not yet been found.

We know that where dandruff appears there is almost always an overactivity of certain glands that are connected to the roots of the hair. They are called “sebaceous glands”, and they produce an oily material called “subunit”. This oily substance makes the scales or flakes greasy. And this can make the scalp itchy.

Sometimes where them is a dandruff condition there are also more bacteria or fungi than are normally found on the scalp. But they do not seem to have much effect on the dandruff. They just complicate the con- dition. Of course, if the dandruff produces an intense itching and the person scratches, this may lead to an infection because of the germs that enter the broken area of the skin.

With mild cases of dandruff, washing the hair at least once or twice a week, and thorough massage will help remove the excess oil and flakes. The preparations for dandruff “control” do help in many cases. But where there is a severe case. and where even washing the hair is irritating, the person should go to a doctor.
